Press Space to play/pause, Esc to stop

Select structure

Drag the red diaphragm downwards to inhale

Trachea (Windpipe)

Structure

The main airway leading from the back of the throat down into the chest. It is supported by rings of cartilage that keep it rigid and open.

Biological role

Acts as the primary conduit for moving oxygen-rich air into the body and carbon dioxide out.

Sport application

During a heavy rugby tackle or a sprint finish, you take massive, forceful gasps of air. The cartilage rings ensure the trachea doesn't collapse under this intense vacuum pressure.
